(WASHINGTON, January 7, 2026) – From October 13-16, 2026, Independent Sector (IS), the only national membership organization representing nonprofits and philanthropic foundations, will host its 2026 National Summit at the Phoenix Convention Center in downtown Phoenix. The official theme for the event will be: The Future We Build Together, with programming emphasizing co-creation, shared leadership, and collective momentum.
In 2026, nonprofits and philanthropies must address weakening U.S. economic growth, growing community need for services, and increasing political polarization. To help organizations address these key issues, Independent Sector’s National Summit 2026 programming will focus on four areas critical for sector growth and resilience: workforce development, financial health, trust and governance, and public advocacy.

“Independent Sector’s National Summit 2025 brought together hundreds of nonprofit leaders to collaborate and strategize on how we address the issues that pose the greatest challenges to our sector and American society at large: financial insecurity, workforce alienation, declining community trust, and government weaponization,” said Dr. Akilah Watkins, president and CEO of Independent Sector. “In 2026, during what is already a polarizing election year, we are bringing nonprofits, philanthropic foundations, and community advocates together under the sunny Phoenix skies to work towards a future where civil society — and the millions of working Americans that power it — have an active role in shaping the economic, political, and social conditions of the communities they serve.”
