At Independent Sector’s National Summit, we honor exceptional leadership and innovative contributions that strengthen the charitable sector.

Regina Jackson accepts the 2025 Janine Lee Mentorship Award

Our three national awards spotlight individuals and ideas that are creating a more vibrant, equitable, and effective charitable sector. These awards are given annually at Independent Sector’s National Summit.

John W. Gardner Leadership Award

The John W. Gardner Leadership Award honors a visionary, transformative leader whose work has made a lasting impact on the charitable sector.

The recipient of the 2025 John W. Gardner Leadership Award is Herman “Art” Taylor, President and CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

More details about the 2026 award are coming soon. The selected honoree will be recognized at the national summit and supported to join us in Phoenix for a special celebration.

Janine Lee Mentorship Award

Independent Sector is excited to announce that nominations for the Janine Lee Mentorship Award are now open!

The award honors a remarkable mentor in the charitable sector and celebrates the legacy of Janine Lee, a beloved leader and advisor who inspired countless individuals throughout her 30-year career.

Nominations are open until June 1. This year’s honoree will be notified in August and will receive the award at Independent Sector’s National Summit 2026 in Phoenix.

Terry McAdam Book Award

The Terry McAdam Book Award recognizes an outstanding book and author whose work offers fresh insights and meaningful contributions to the charitable sector.

This award builds on a legacy previously stewarded by the Alliance for Nonprofit Management and continues the tradition of elevating thought leadership in the field.

Eligibility: Books published between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025

Focus: Advancing new perspectives, research, or ideas that strengthen the nonprofit and philanthropic community
